The Atascadero Fire Department is celebrating 100 years of service to the community. In celebration, they will be providing free rides on Saturday, December 9th from 1pm-3pm in a firetruck.

ATASCADERO — ATASCADERO — ATASCADERO — This year marks the 100th anniversary of Atascadero’s Fire & Emergency Services in our lovely community. Since its inception in 1922, the Fire Department has developed in terms of equipment, buildings, and personnel. And we’re having a party this year.
The Atascadero Fire Department began unofficially in 1915, with a handful of volunteers and a model-T Ford as a fire vehicle., where everyone was paid $1.00 a fire.

During the summer, Lee Cole, who had his own fire vehicle, was apprehended. When Cole was on duty, he was in command of the volunteers.
The Atascadero Fire Protection District was established exactly 100 years ago, in 1922. In February of 1926, Atascadero had its first paid fire department. The previous firehouse may still be seen on Traffic Way, a block up from the new firehouse, at 5815, albeit it is currently utilized for retail.
The Fire Agency was renamed Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services on Sept. 7, 2016, after it was determined that the term “Fire Department” did not adequately describe the services offered by the department.
At the City Council meeting on February 22, 2022, Atascadero Fire Chief Casey Bryson was presented with a virtual proclamation commemorating the 100-year anniversary of Fire and Emergency Services.
“In honor of the Atascadero Fire Protection District’s 100th anniversary, presently known as Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services.”
A tiny, all-volunteer Fire Department was created in 1915, at the start of the Colony of Atascadero, to service the newly formed settlement.
The Atascadero Fire Protection District was established in 1922, after a deadly 5,000-acre wildland fire near the Eagle Ranch property.
Similarly, the Atascadero Fire Protection District was created as an all-volunteer team devoted to provide continuous fire protection services to the town of 3,000 inhabitants and a 7-square-mile region.
The colony of Atascadero’s first paid Fire Department was created on February 4, 1926. In contrast, the city of Atascadero was founded in 1979. The Atascadero Fire Protection District was disbanded, and the Atascadero Fire Department was absorbed into the newly formed city.
Similarly, the Atascadero Fire Department developed from one to two fire stations and from ten to twenty-one professional firefighters throughout the years.
The purpose of the Atascadero Fire Department, on the other hand, has changed and developed to meet the increasingly complicated demands of our developing community. Constantly working to give its inhabitants with prompt and effective fire and emergency response.
In 2021, Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services responded professionally to 3,546 emergency calls in our community, including over 2,280 emergency medical calls, 22 structure fires, and 11 grass or brush fire incidents.
“Now, on behalf of the City Council of the City of Atascadero, and in recognition of the Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services’ more than 100 years of superior fire protection, rescue, and emergency services to the community, I hereby proclaim our sincerest congratulations and appreciation to the Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services,” said Mayor Pro Tem Heather Newsom, who gave the proclamation.
