The 2022 NASCAR race at Portland International Raceway is an intriguing proposition. With the track recently being named a finalist in the bid process, it remains to be seen if this will become a reality.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series may be headed to the Pacific Northwest in the near future. The governing body is looking at the potential of hosting a race at Portland International Raceway during the 2022 season, according to “The Athletic.”
On Saturday, Sept. 25, veteran reporter Jordan Bianchi delivered the report. He said that NASCAR has been looking at bringing the Cup Series to the Pacific Northwest in order to tap into an underserved market. Using the Xfinity Series to test the track is a step in the right way. The sanctioning authority has yet to announce the timetable for 2022 and validate Bianchi’s findings.
Since June 3, 2000, when Jack Sprague won at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Wash., none of the top three series have raced in the Pacific Northwest. On April 22, 2000, the Truck Series drivers raced at Portland International Raceway for the second of only two visits to the circuit. Andy Houston began sixth and won after leading one complete lap over the 1.967-mile road circuit.
Two current NASCAR Cup Series drivers have raced at Portland International Raceway before. Kevin Harvick finished 20th in the 1999 Truck Series race at the road circuit, while Greg Biffle took the win. Kurt Busch made his Roush debut in 2020 and finished 11th.
At PIR, several racing series have competed.
Although NASCAR has not raced at PIR since the 2000 season, other series have held races there. PIR hosted IndyCar races from 1987 through 2007, before taking a break. The series did, however, return to the circuit in 2018, 2019, and 2021. Alex Palou, who won the checkered flag on Sept. 12, 2021, is the most recent champion.
Similarly, on Sept. 10, the ARCA Menards Series West returned to PIR for the first time since 2012, showcasing some of the up-and-comers. At the road course, 18 drivers raced, with Taylor Gray winning his first race of the season by leading 18 of the 50 laps. Jake Drew grabbed the checkered flag, but a last-lap penalty cost him the race, giving Gray the victory.
During the ARCA Menards Series West race, nine different drivers took the lead, despite seven overall cautions – six for accidents. A stack-up on the first turn of the race pushed pole-sitter Drew out of the lead, giving Gray the lead early.
There are still concerns about PIR’s ability to host NASCAR races.

While NASCAR is said to be interested in bringing the Xfinity and Cup Series to the Pacific Northwest, there are concerns regarding the track’s capacity to handle such large-scale events. The length of the pit road, as well as other variables, may cause problems.
There are several areas of worry at the Oregon road track, according to a 2018 blog by racing writer Jeff Gluck. He pointed out that the security arrangement is less-than-ideal, with concrete barriers and low gates, and that there are no permanent restrooms or food stalls.
Pit road isn’t long enough for a full NASCAR field, according to Gluck, and there isn’t much space for growth. Furthermore, the Cup Series teams do not have access to real garages where they can operate on the stock cars. Teams in the Xfinity Series and Truck Series have a lot of experience working on their cars next to haulers and beneath awnings.
None of these concerns are sufficient to rule out the possibility of a NASCAR race at Portland International Raceway. Instead, the facilities would just need to be tweaked to make the weekend more enjoyable for both the players and the spectators.
